GoatStarter: Founder screening
At GoatStarter, a selective accelerator where founders build AI-first businesses from scratch, I worked on the screening side. I ran intro calls with candidate founders, assessed their projects and readiness, and onboarded the right ones. Once I was the applicant; this time I was on the evaluating side of the table.
What GoatStarter is
GoatStarter is a selective accelerator that helps founders build their own AI-first business from scratch. It isn't a course; across a set of modules, candidates build a real product with real customers. That selectivity makes a screening process (deciding who gets in) a necessary part of the program.
What I did
I was on that screening side. I ran one-on-one intro calls with candidate founders, listening to and weighing their ideas, the project in front of them, and how ready and committed they were. The goal wasn't just to find a "good idea," but to pick people who would genuinely benefit from the program and see the work through. The ones I found a fit, I brought into the program.
The other side of the table
Not long ago I was the one applying to a team, waiting to hear back. Finding myself, soon after, on the side running the calls and evaluating was a lesson in itself. The more candidates I spoke with, the more clearly I saw that a venture stands on commitment and execution far more than on the idea alone.
